Tony West – North West Commercial Photographer

Tony West I’m a commercial photographer based in the Lake District, active throughout the North West, including Cumbria, Lancashire and Cheshire. With many years of experience I shoot a wide variety of commercial subjects to a high professional standard covering business, industry, product, tourism and personnel photography.

My freelance advertising background gives me an insight to the needs of clients where photography must not only stand alone but be seen as an integral graphic component to their brand. Years working for international advertising agencies as an art director have given me this unique insight. Additionally this experience led to working with many outstanding commercial photographers who have all had their part in shaping my style and technique.

Lake District Tourism Photography

Tourism photography in Cumbria and Lancashire plays a very important part in my work as this represents a significant sector of the regional economy. I cover catalogue, web and brochure shoots for many Lakeland businesses involved in travel, sport, culture, attractions and accommodation. I also regularly work with many of the region’s public and private sector tourist organizations, as well as the national tourism body, Visit England.

Architectural Photography

I have had a long personal interest in architecture and have been shooting this technically challenging subject for many years. For those who understand the exacting standards required, will know that specialist shift lenses are key to delivering photography where careful control of verticals are essential. I own a comprehesive set of these which has been a significant investment but worth every penny.

Studio Photography in the North West

Studio photography fits in seamlessly with my location work. Whether it's product, still life or personnel photography I offer a service based from my own studio in the Lake District, or alternatively I can also provide a portable studio setup, which has benefits for some clients.

Photography of Arts & Culture

This sector is a personal speciality of mine and I've been lucky to have been awarded commissions for many leading galleries and museums in the NW including the Tate Liverpool, Lakeland Arts Trust, The Peoples History Museum and Manchester's Science and Industry Museum. I also shoot films in this sector and was pleased to receive a commission in 2019 from the Royal Society of Sculptors.

Mustard Tree

Through my work I meet many people from all walks of life. Those having experienced immense commercial success and those that are less fortunate. I was introduced to Mustard Tree by my daughter who volunteered her services with fundraising. I've seen many homeless in Manchester and was proud that she was doing something positive to help but I had very little idea how this problem occurs. I was invited to shoot at their Ancoats base and what I discovered deeply touched me. In the months to come they will have a new website and I feel privileged to have contributed to this. To all the volunteers and staff, thank you so much for letting me share your world. For anyone else reading this please visit LATEST PROJECTS  and spread the word MUSTARD TREE

My Inspiration - Tony West LBIPP

My earliest memory of photography was as a child delving through a box of family prints going back to the 1920’s. I can still recall the touch, the whiff of chemical residue and my imagination’s best attempt to put me behind the camera the moment that shutter opened.

At age 12 my mother lent me her German camera for a school trip to the Yorkshire Dales. I was so excited taking my first exposure that I rolled the film past the first two frames. It was an unremarkable image but I can still feel the exhilaration of my first attempt to capture a moment in time.

Since that experience I have not taken a single image without reliving the same magic. Every opportunity to shoot is an opportunity to interpret, craft and let that imagination run free.

I do this for a living. I still can’t believe it.
